Michael Evans Earns 5th Degree Black Sash
[Medford, NY]? On behalf of the Shaolin Kung Fu Studios, Shih Jiao Moses Arocho presented Michael Evans with the prestigious title of Sifu ? the equivalent of a 5th degree Black Belt ? in recognition of his continued contributions within the Shaolin Lohan system of kung fu. Michael Evans has earned recognition in the system for his innovative teaching methods based on both Eastern and Western principles, and has earned the respect of many residents of the Patchogue-Medford school district through his efforts to provide a creative outlet to students of the district during this past school year. Evans has been studying the martial arts for over twenty years, and has been training in the Shaolin Lohan system for over a decade. He is also a Graduate of the NY College of Health Professions in Syosset, NY, where he studied Massage Therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Evans actively participates in the President's Volunteer Service Award program by teaching martial arts classes to under-privileged children.
According to Shih Jiao Moses Arocho, the head of the Shaolin Lohan system, ?The achievement of the Sifu level in the Chinese martial arts is a major honor, being reserved for those individuals who have shown an intimate knowledge not only of the movements and applications of the martial arts, but also of the philosophy, ethics, and science behind the lessons ? as well as loyalty, compassion, and the desire and ability to teach.? By attaining ?Sifu-ship,? a disciple is acknowledged by his or her teacher as having the requisite mastery of the system to teach independently, continuing a tradition of over 15 centuries. ?In fact,? continues Arocho, ?The Chinese characters which make up the term Sifu are those of ?teacher? and ?father,? which only reinforces the nurturing bond of trust between a sifu and his students.?
Michael Evans is the co-owner of the Medford branch of the Shaolin Kung Fu Studios where he teaches classes and seminars for children and adults. "My goal has always been to re-introduce the tradition of the kwoon (martial arts school) as being a central part of the community. In the old days in China, a kwoon was a place for not only martial training, but an institute of scholarly pursuits, a place of help in time of need, and of healing in times of pain," says Michael.
