Marilyn and Robin Levy aren?t your typical mother and daughter; they are both open heart surgery survivors. Marilyn had triple bypass at age 49 and Robin had surgery at age 4 for ventricular septal defect (VSD) and at age 32 for a valve repair.
Yvette Fields is also a survivor. At age 42, Yvette suffered her first in a series of strokes. Now, at 46, Yvette speaks out about the early warning signs of stoke and has become a resource of education to the Long Island community.
All three of these extraordinary women will have the honor of being ?Red Cap? Ambassadors at the 15th Annual American Heart Association Long Island Heart Walk taking place on Sunday, September 17, 2006. This year?s walk will take place at Nassau Community College. The non-competitive, three-mile walk ? which begins at 8:30 a.m. ? raises funds to support heart disease and stroke research and educational programs in the Long Island community. The Heart Walk also promotes walking as part of a healthy lifestyle.
A ?Red Cap? is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. ?Red Caps? refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke or heart surgery who wear the red caps and walk in the American Heart Walk. Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten. The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease.
?Neither of us smoke, drink or eat bad food? said Robin Levy, survivor. ?We are living proof that the American Heart Association saves lives.?
As Red Cap for the Long Island Heart Walk, Marilyn, Robin and Yvette will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren?t ?just an older man?s disease.?

Regular aerobic physical activity increases your fitness level and capacity for exercise. It also plays a role in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke and is linked to cardiovascular mortality. Regular physical activity can help control blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes and obesity. It can also help reduce blood pressure.
