No Check Cashing Store For East Rockaway Village of East Rockaway - 03-09-2005
At a news conference held, this morning, on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Centre Avenue in East Rockaway, Village of East Rockaway Mayor Joseph Carrigan announced that a check-cashing store will never be opening or operating in the storefront located at that corner.
According to Mayor Carrigan, a letter of agreement has been signed by the attorneys representing the applicants for the check-cashing store and the Village Attorney. Pursuant to this agreement, the application for the check-cashing store will be withdrawn. Additionally, the landlord will execute a covenant and restriction in favor of the Village of East Rockaway that a check-cashing store can never open or operate at this location. In exchange, the village will pay a small portion of the damages, which the applicant claimed in recently commenced litigation.
Mayor Carrigan declared that ?this settlement is a victory for the residents of East Rockaway.? Trustee Ed Sieban continued that ?we have stated from the beginning that this location was inappropriate to have a check-cashing store. Its proximity to the parochial and public grammar schools and lack of adequate parking made this storefront an unsafe place to operate this type of business. The residents have voiced their clear concern for the safety of our residents especially our children. This agreement preserves the safety and welfare of the entire community.?
Trustee Bruno Romano emphatically stated that ?the settlement is also a win-win for the taxpayers.? Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher commented that ?this agreement provides a final resolution to the check cashing issue, while preventing protracted and expensive litigation and legal wrangling.?
Mayor Carrigan concluded by thanking the residents for all of their support and civic advocacy on this vitally important issue and emphasizing that village residents and local elected officials must work together to preserve the quaint suburban nature of our wonderful village.
