Long Island Man Wins World Chili Eating Title The Association of Independent Competitive Eaters - 11-02-2004
By Dave O'Karma
I'm from Texas, so I love chili." gasped Juan Paz, a large bellied bull of a man." But, after my fourth bowl when I heard them announce that Chowhound Chapman had just finished his eighth bowl, it took the wind out of my britches... and I decided to throw in the spoon"
"Chowhound" Arnie Chapman took the wind out of all the other competitors britches also as he spooned and guzzled his way through 9-1/2 10 ounce bowls of chili in 5 minutes to win the International Chili Society's 3rd Annual World's Chili Eating Championship October 23rd at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Chapman, a social worker from Long Island, New York, prepped himself by coming to the event early and watching some of the best chili cooks in the world prepare their special recipes.
"After about an hour of walking around and just taking in the wonderful aroma of real chili my belly was chomping at the belt to go to town. I knew it was ready for some great eating." said Chowhound, as he kissed the Champion Chili Bowl trophy.
The Chili Eating Championship was sanctioned by the Association of Independent Competitive Eaters http://www.competitiveeaters.com/ an organization of eaters from around the United States that organizes and performs in eating contests.
As for Juan Paz. As he waddled away from the stage I asked him if had gotten his second wind.
"Not yet..." he smiled. "But, after four bowls of chili, I don't think it'll be very long in coming."
